Open Air for Tuesday, November 17, 2009
At the end of World War I, Edward Elgar's thoughts turned to valedictory things, a summing up. In his Cello Concerto he gave voice to the sorrows, the searing angers of cataclysmic loss. But also to a defiant resolve to live and thrive. It was not an easy combination to pull off--many artists found themselves permanently mired in the ghastly absurdities of what they'd witnessed. This week on Open Air, the profound Achievement, of Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto.
